Description

General Information

The University of New Mexico Testing Center administers the GED tests on a pre-registration basis to candidates 16 years old and older.

  • Candidates who are 16 or 17 must complete an Underage Permission Form, which requires a parental/guardian signature as well as a signature from a school superintendent or authorized school representative.
  • Registration must be in person.
  • Candidates can register Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:00 p.m.

The GED is used to earn a GED High School Diploma. The GED is a second chance for adults who did not complete a formal high school education. The GED measures skills in: writing, social studies, science, interpreting literature and arts, and mathematics.

If you are re-taking all or a portion of the GED and did not test at this location, you must have your transcript sent to us before you will be allowed to test.

You are allowed to take the GED a maximum of three times in a testing year. Scores will become invalid after three years from the date of the first exam session.

An official transcript will be mailed 3 -4 weeks after the test date.

Required Identification

Two forms of identification are required to pre-register and take the GED.

  • First form:government issued photo identification must indicate:
    • name
    • date of birth
    • signature

Acceptable photo identification includes New Mexico driver’s license or New Mexico non driver’s identification, out of state driver’s license, or military identification.

  • Second Form: must verify two of the following:
    • name
    • photo
    • birth date
    • social security number
    • signature

Re-testing and Completion

Candidates re-testing must wait a minimum of sixty days before re-taking any failed portion of the GED. Re-testers must register in person and pay the $8.00 registration fee. Candidates who fail to show up for one of the testing days or do not take all five exams as scheduled, may complete missed portions on re-test dates and will be subject to an $8.00 fee.

Passing Scores

A minimum standard score of 410 on each test and an average standard score of 450 on all 5 tests is required to pass.

Special Accommodations

Candidates who would like to request special accommodations should inform Testing Center staff and complete a special accommodations request form. All special accommodation requests forms must be approved by the New Mexico GED office.

Fees

There is a $40.00 fee for taking the GED, which includes an $8.00 non-refundable registration fee that must be paid at time of registration. Candidates who cancel, change test dates, or don’t show up on scheduled test dates will be required to pay an additional $8.00 to reschedule. First time candidates must take all five GED examinations during the same week.
